In this special episode of the Startup Ecosystem Podcast, we revisit a conversation from two years ago, recorded during a visit to North Macedonia. Eli David Rokah, CEO of StartupBlink, sits down with Igor Madjov, founder of Startup Macedonia, to explore how Skopje is evolving from a service-based IT outsourcing city into a product-driven startup hub with global aspirations.

If your objective is to analyze, map, promote, or activate your startup ecosystem, we invite you to explore our Ecosystem Development Services.

Skopje’s Transition from Services to Product Innovation

North Macedonia’s capital, Skopje, is undergoing a transformation. Once known primarily for its service-oriented IT sector, the city is now shifting toward product innovation and startup creation. As Madjov explains, the foundation was laid over the last decade by local agencies and freelancers offering development services to European companies. This not only brought capital into the country but also equipped a generation of engineers with the technical expertise and global work standards needed to build their own ventures.

While Skopje remains one of the most cost-effective cities in Central and Eastern Europe, its low living costs have also attracted a wave of digital nomads and international talent. This affordability, combined with a strong engineering culture and problem-solving mindset, has created an environment where building globally relevant products is becoming the norm.

Ecosystem Growth and Current Landscape

Since its founding in 2016, Startup Macedonia has tracked and supported the evolution of the local ecosystem. Today, the country is home to an estimated 300 active startups, with many more freelancers and small teams working on global products. The ecosystem, while still early-stage, has matured significantly in terms of community cohesion, founder mindset, and support infrastructure.

Igor highlighted the rise in product-oriented startups, especially those emerging from previously service-based companies. In parallel, a new generation of founders are entering the ecosystem with a global-first mindset and a willingness to experiment, iterate, and grow.

Despite the progress, challenges remain. North Macedonia has yet to produce its first unicorn, and access to capital, particularly at the growth stage, is still limited. Successful startups often relocate or open secondary offices abroad to access funding and scale more easily.

Regional Connectivity and Global Potential

North Macedonia’s compact size could be one of its greatest strengths. With just under 2 million residents and fast connectivity to regional and European markets, the country has the potential to become a strategic launchpad for startups developing minimum viable products (MVPs) and early-stage ventures.

The Role of Private Sector Ecosystem Builders

As a private sector ecosystem builder, Madjov reflected on the passion and perseverance required to play this role. Operating without guaranteed support from the government, he emphasized the need to create value for startups while building sustainable models of support.

Conclusion

North Macedonia’s startup scene may still be flying under the radar, but with its strong tech talent, supportive community, and rising international visibility, it’s a space worth watching. If supported by smart policy, private-public collaboration, and continued entrepreneurial momentum, Skopje could become a major innovation hub in Southeast Europe.
