Galway is located in the West of Ireland, approximately a two-hour drive (200 km) from the capital, Dublin. The population in the greater Galway hinterland exceeds 250,000 people, making it the island of Ireland\u2019s fourth largest center of the population after Dublin, Belfast, and Cork. For many Irish and international visitors, Galway is synonymous with the Galway Horse Races.\u00a0 In StartupBlink&#8217;s 2019 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/startupservices.startupblink.com\/ecosystem-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a><\/strong>, Galway is ranked 3rd in Ireland and 227th globally.\u00a0 <!--more-->For over 100 years, the Galway Races has gone from strength to strength with now in excess of 150,000 people attending the week-long festival every July. Recognised as the greatest midsummer festival in Ireland, the \u2018Races\u2019 is known for attracting people from all walks of life with a broad appeal beyond traditional race goers. Complemented by other cultural experiences such as the Galway International Arts Festival, it is indicative of the standards of excellence that Galway strives for &#8211; recognised recently with the city\u2019s designation as the European Capital of Culture 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Galway was named as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.galwaycity.ie\/news\/31\/238\/Galway-City-Named-Europe-s-Micro-City-of-the-Year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">top microcity in Europe<\/a> in 2014\/2015 by the Financial Times fDi magazine (for cities less than 100,000 people). We are also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelandleisure.com\/slideshows\/worlds-friendliest-cities\/30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">world\u2019s friendliest city<\/a> according to Travel &amp; Leisure Magazine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.startupblink.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Galway-Magazine.jpg\" alt=\"Galway Magazine\" width=\"707\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.startupblink.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Galway-Magazine.jpg 707w, https:\/\/www.startupblink.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Galway-Magazine-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.startupblink.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Galway-Magazine-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has played a significant role in the development of Galway\u2019s business landscape. Since the 1960s, companies in sectors such as medtech and life sciences, ICT, food and engineering to include: Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Fidelity Investments, SAP, Cisco, Avaya, Aviva, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Valeo Vision Systems and many more have operated successfully in Galway. The importance of this multinational base was that is laid the foundation for the development of a vibrant indigenous sub-supply and logistics sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Galway is Ireland\u2019s medtech capital, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/business\/technology\/news\/galways-shortcut-to-global-success-with-its-medtech-startups-31145993.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">third of Ireland\u2019s medtech workforce<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emdt.co.uk\/daily-buzz\/seven-most-important-medtech-clusters-europe-%E2%80%93-galway-ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of Europe\u2019s<\/a> if not the world\u2019s top medtech hubs, with a density of companies and medtech research institutes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siliconrepublic.com\/innovation\/item\/13263-boston-scientific-invests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">only rivaled by Minnesota<\/a>. Just take a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/technologyvoice.com\/2015\/05\/27\/galway-tech-map-version-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Galway Tech Map<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/technologyvoice.com\/2015\/08\/10\/galway-medtech-map-irelands-medical-device-cluster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Galway Medtech Map<\/a> and you\u2019ll get a good overview of the companies based here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the last decade, Ireland has attracted a new wave of global brands such as Facebook, Apple, and Google to base key European operations here. Galway has also benefited from this trend. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siliconrepublic.com\/jobs\/galway-jobs-siteminder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">100 jobs<\/a> were recently announced by Australian hotel cloud giant SiteMinder. Like Dublin and Cork, this has boosted the startup ecosystem as personnel emerge with key skills gained at these multinationals.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Galway\u2019s Startup Success Stories<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are 16,381 enterprises in Galway. Over 250 employ over 50 people, with the majority, 14,900, employing less than 10 people. Established international businesses which were founded and are headquartered in Galway include Chanelle, Aerogen, Supermacs, JFC, CF Energy, and SSL Logistics. Other companies such as financial services firm Fintrax (sold for \u20ac170 million, and subsequently valued at \u20ac0.5 billion), fleet management leader Celtrak, and medical devices manufacturers Creganna (acquired for \u20ac821 million) and Creagh Medical (acquired for \u20ac30 million) were established in Galway before their multi-million euro acquisitions. Current international growth focused startup businesses include: Channel Mechanics, Game Golf, Altocloud, Nua Naturals, Hillwalk Tours, Solaris Tea, Ex Ordo, PiP Payments, OnePageCRM, VT Networks (based in DCU Aplha now), DiaNia Technologies, and Bluedrop Medical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Some of Galway\u2019s award-winning businesses include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.topform.us\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Topform <\/a>won the SFA National Small Business Award 2016. Topform has evolved from a traditional manufacturer of kitchen worktops. Established in 1976 the company now employs forty-seven at its manufacturing facility in Gort, Co. Galway.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerogen.com\/our-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">John Power &#8211; Aerogen<\/a> \u2013 2016 winner of the entrepreneur of the year at the RSM awards in Milan.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerogen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Aerogen <\/a>\u2013 overall winner of the Irish Exporters Association Exporter of the Year Awards 2014.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.essentialskillz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">EssentialSkillz<\/a>, providers of online compliance training and risk assessment software to SMEs and enterprises worldwide, was ranked in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Awards for 2015. Established in Galway in 2001, EssentialSkillz has offices in the UK, USA, and Ireland and is recognised as a market leader for Health and Safety eLearning.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pocketanatomy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Pocket Anatomy<\/a> won the 2014 Best Startup Award at The Next Web Europe Conference.<\/li>\n<li>In 2013, Galway companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westwayhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Westway Health<\/a> and Element Software won the two top awards at Inter Trade Ireland\u2019s Seedcorn Investor Readiness Competition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Strengths of the Galway Startup Ecosystem<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A total of 19,472 new companies were formed in 2015 in Ireland according to the Vision.net Business Barometer. Ireland is a good place to start and run a business. Galway was the third most popular startup county with 803 companies registered during the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">First and foremost, Galway is a great place to live for families young and old. It is a happening place with a wonderful social, tourism, community, multicultural and commercial vibe. Part of the magic is that Galway is a university city with two third-level institutions having strong academic and research and development traditions. There are 26,000 third-level students in the city, and 45% of the adult population have third-level education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In terms of the city\u2019s startup roadmap, 2014 saw the emergence of Startup Galway which serves as an umbrella network for all things startup-related in Galway. It is both a networking organization and an agent for change. In 2015 and 2016, several new startup coworking and incubation facilities opened in the city center (SuperPixel Labs, Startlab, WorkBench, and the PorterShed), with the emerging tech spaces in the Eyre Square area being dubbed \u201cSilicon Square\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A new angel syndicate was announced early in 2016 with the \u20ac2m worth of capital set aside that year for startups on the western seaboard. HBAN\u2019s \u2018West by North West\u2019 fund (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hban.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">WxNW<\/a>) was set up to invest in sectors including tech, manufacturing, education, and tourism. A similar medtech angel syndicate is also facilitated by HBAN. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdc.ie\/wdc-investment-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">WDC has an investment fund<\/a> to support enterprises in the West (from Clare up to Donegal), and WestBIC has been providing advice and services for entrepreneurs planning or starting a new business in the West for nearly 20 years now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A digital-focused accelerator programme will be launched in Galway in early 2017 based in the PorterShed. This is part of the vision for the Galway City Innovation District. The Yield Lab from St. Louis also announced their intent to run an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theyieldlab.com\/galway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">agtech accelerator in Galway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cGalway may be considered small in relation to other MedTech cities, however, it has a big heart. The connections which exist across and between industry and academia and the willingness of talented individuals to lend a helping hand makes it an ideal location for a start-up. DiaNia Technologies is an innovative materials science company focused on the development of advanced technologies to enhance the performance and functionality of medical devices.\u00a0 Our minimum viable product has the potential to reduce friction on the inside and outside surface of many catheter-based medical devices whilst increasing patient safety.\u00a0 For us, the ability to tap into the wealth of global MedTech business knowledge and experience available in Galway helped mould our strategic direction.\u00a0 Selection of DiaNia Technologies by the European Commission for a Phase 1 Horizon 2020 award demonstrated that our technology has the ability to meet a huge market need within the medical device industry.\u00a0 The recent investment in DiaNia Technologies by experienced MedTech professionals and Enterprise Ireland will enable us to commercialise a global solution to an unmet market need through the application of materials science.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sinead Kenny, CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/dianiatechnologies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">DiaNia Technologies<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Weaknesses of the Galway Startup Ecosystem<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Galway can be viewed as a microcosm of Ireland\u2019s economy both historically and projecting into the future. Ireland is a small market on the global stage. This context must be fully embraced in the development of enterprise and startup policy. To develop the startup ecosystem in Galway requires challenges to be addressed at both the national and regional level and at both large enterprise and startup level. It also requires Galway to part its full part within \u201cIreland Inc.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Enterprise Ireland has a vision for Irish enterprise to be a powerhouse of economic growth and job creation in Ireland. Galway buys into this vision. Five issues which Ireland Inc. needs to continually revisit are:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Availability of information:<\/strong> This would include supports for nascent entrepreneurs and a streamlined process to avail of soft and financial support for startups.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promotion of startup role models:<\/strong> These are of all types to include female, graduate, technology and social entrepreneurship to stimulate and foster continued interest in the enterprise. The key is highlighting a robust startup process to include strict market testing and validation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advanced infrastructure:<\/strong> Enterprise-grade infrastructure is required such as telecommunications, roads, rail and air access along with the startup-specific infrastructure to include coworking, incubation, and graduation spaces for larger startups as they scale.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research commercialisation:<\/strong> We need to facilitate the leveraging of research outputs from our third-level institutions and research centers\/institutes for spinouts and licensing to Irish-based businesses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aiming to scale our startups:<\/strong> By international standards, Ireland could improve its performance in developing companies that reach beyond \u20ac10 million and then \u20ac100 million and \u20ac1 billion in annual revenue.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Significant work has been undertaken by various bodies to identify how Galway\u2019s startup ecosystem can grow and succeed. For further reading, consult:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>National Policy:<\/strong> Startup Ireland lobbied for pro-startup policies to be implemented at the national level &#8211; for example, see <a href=\"https:\/\/startupireland.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/StartupIreland-Pre-Budget-Submission-2014-Google-Docs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Startup Ireland\u2019s submission on the 2015 Budget<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regional Jobs Policy:<\/strong> The National <a href=\"https:\/\/www.djei.ie\/en\/What-We-Do\/Business-Sectoral-Initiatives\/Action-Plan-for-Jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Action Plan for Jobs<\/a> is published annually and there is also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.djei.ie\/en\/Publications\/Action-Plan-for-Jobs-West-Region-2015-2017.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Regional Action Plan for Jobs from 2015<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regional Development:<\/strong> There was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.galwaychamber.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Galway-Chamber-Economic-Development-Plan-Submission-2015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Galway Chamber of Commerce Enterprise Strategy Group<\/a> submission to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.galwaycity.ie\/development-plan-downloads-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Galway City and County Economic Development Plan<\/a> in 2015.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Startup Ecosystem Development:<\/strong> Startup Commons produced a report on the Startup Gathering Galway event held on 16th October 2015.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Galway Dashboard:<\/strong> Startups are one focus of the enterprise, innovation and employment aspect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/galwaydashboard.ie\/enterprise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Galway Dashboard<\/a>, produced in 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Biggest Players in the Galway Startup Ecosystem<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Innovation Centres &amp; Startup Programmes <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Startup promoters and teams have access to several innovation, incubation and coworking spaces in the Greater Galway area.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Innovation Hub, GMIT<br \/>\nThis on-campus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmit.ie\/gmit-innovation-hubs%20%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Innovation Hub<\/a> (iHub), provides a supportive environment for startups on their journey from concept to commercial success. Phase II of the programme is for six months. It provides leading-edge training, mentoring and introductions to early-stage capital investment networks. This is facilitated and supported by proactive and progressive personnel working within our State Enterprise Agencies led by Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Office Galway &#8211; offering national supports delivered locally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A weekly column about startup activity in Galway was published in the Galway Advertiser from 2015 to 2016, written by Bank of Ireland Startlab\u2019s Tracy Keogh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/technologyvoice.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Technology Voice<\/a> publishes stories about technology developments and events in Galway (and Ireland), on an irregular basis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/noiseygen.xyz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">NoiseyGenXYZ<\/a> ezine and podcast promotes awareness of how extraordinary people with extraordinary ideas from generations X, Y and Z are impacting on and shaping the future entrepreneurial landscape in Galway.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Major Startup Events in Galway<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantec.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">AtlanTec<\/a> Festival, organised annually by the Information Technology Association of Galway (ITAG), brings in world-class speakers and practitioners and connects them with the most exciting innovative companies in the West of Ireland. The goal of AtlanTec is to unite and empower the different technology communities by facilitating the spread of information within the tech sectors in the West of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/innovatingwest.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Innovating West<\/a> is another annual conference which brings together changemakers and innovators in the West of Ireland. Set up in 2015, it initially focused on highlighting key innovators who have established successful businesses along the west coast of Ireland, giving local entrepreneurs and businesspeople the chance to learn from them and their successes. In 2016, it expanded its remit, bringing in international entrepreneurs, investors and other guest speakers from Europe and the US. A sister event, Venture West, brought all of Ireland\u2019s VCs together for a public conference and meeting in Galway in late 2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/meetwest.ie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">MeetWest<\/a>, held each year towards November, is the largest business networking event in the West of Ireland and brings all of the business sectors together to connect and collaborate. The event includes a conference and networking dinner but also facilitates matchmade one-on-one meetings as well as ad-hoc opportunities to network and do business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">SCCUL Awards &amp; Showcase: An entrepreneurial locally based financial institution \u2013 St Columba\u2019s Credit Union Ltd (SCCUL) &#8211; has for the past 6 years created Galway\u2019s largest entrepreneur competition called the <a href=\"https:\/\/scculawards.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">SCCUL Awards<\/a>. In 2015, 160 early stage businesses entered the awards which have a prize fund of \u20ac50,000. The awards event has expanded in recent years with all entrants and local entrepreneur ecosystem participants exhibiting in a Business Expo at the local University campus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/portershed.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">PorterShed<\/a> has become a nexus for startup events in Galway. Between its opening in May 2016 and the time or writing, 30 events had been held in the PorterShed, attracting about 2,000 people into space.
