Place Pixel (placepixel.com) is a networking & urban exploration app that feels like a game.
It offers an entirely unique experience, while overcoming some key issues that people face when using services like Foursquare and Yelp: namely, that they focus too heavily on businesses (and thus overlook many important things in between), and that they are too much trouble to leave ratings, reviews, and tips in.
The key experience Place Pixel offers is this: when users open the app, they are presented with a grid of tiles—or “pixels”—each representing a 10x10m area in real space. Users are then encouraged to go about the city, registering things that are meaningful to them with a simple “upvote” or “downvote.” This instantly changes the color and size of the pixels they’re standing in, for everyone to see. The final result is a living, breathing “map of likeability,” that shows with great clarity which areas are appreciated, and which are not.
