MDS is a SaaS company that is developing a wind turbine computerized maintenance management system. The system places a tablet computer in the wind turbine technician’s hand for field data collection as well as enables a paperless office. Proprietary database optimization algorithms are used to minimize maintenance costs.
The current maintenance approach primarily uses paper. Technicians fill out a paper form and it is often stored in a banker’s box where it is rarely reviewed. The technician’s memory is used to track maintenance trends over time.
US wind capacity has grown at a rate of 28% per year and now there are $50B worth of turbines coming out of warranty. Maintenance makes up nearly one third of the total cost of ownership and maintenance spending is projected to double to $6B by 2025.
The goals are: 1) introduce an efficient field data intake solution, 2) use analytics to make work order data actionable, and 3) expand to off-shore wind and other energy sectors.
